There is only one factor for success or failure -The human. If we want to get the best employees, then we have to accept the new rules of the game. Trust, information sharing, transparency and remote working.
At first glance, this introduction may be commonplace and perhaps we do not understand what these words are doing in such a sentence. But the world is changing and its speed is exponential (nothing new). Large pyramid-structured and large corporations structured with a high hierarchy, working days 9 through 5, are breaking down. Robotic technology takes their place so quickly that, when we realize it, we're communicating with human-sounding machines, whilst we didn't even know ...
Besides, the big cities have become impossible to deal with in the past decades because of the labour force and the infrastructure load they have caused. The daily commuting is 3-4 hours a day, even within the city limits. This is not only an unsustainable point from an economic point of view but also an environmental point of view. Electric cars do not solve the fundamental problem on this issue, at most environmental pollution occurs elsewhere, and if we think globally, it will not reassure us.
Another important question that the introductory sentence refers to is the acquisition of the right workforce. Do not let the opportunity to choose the best people for your project be affected by the country, county or city someone lives in.
From the employer's point of view, it's simply ignorant to look past the fact that remote working means significant cost savings compared to rising real estate prices and office rentals.
Last year, according to the Eurostat survey, only 2.5% of employees worked in remote working in Hungary. Which is exactly half of the EU average. However, trends indicate that within 10 years every third employee will work through remote work.
Remote work - facts and misconceptions
Most of the employers are not aware of the differences between remote working, freelance and outsourcing. They are convinced that these ways are unreliable and ineffective.
Here are some facts to dispel these misconceptions. The 6nomads team made a survey in which 250 developers were surveyed, analyzed 400 profiles of LinkedIn working in remote working and achieved the following results:
Which are the three most important benefits of remote work?
More than 85% of respondents said that the most important benefit for them is leaving their daily commuting.
Half of the respondents have the advantage of spending more time with their family.
Just over a third of respondents said that remote working is an opportunity to get involved in exciting foreign projects and even higher salaries.
The lack of the opportunity not to go to an office for specified period results in an unnoticed work as healthy and burning out.
In addition to the advantages, we also have to face the disadvantages of remote work. The survey shows that almost half of the respondents feel that work and private life are not well separated. Especially when colleagues work in other time zones and have to adapt to each other.
The lack of the opportunity not to go to an office for a specified period results in an unnoticed work as healthy and burning out.
20% of the respondents lacked a sense of belonging to the team. Communication problems that are caused by this modality are mentioned in similar proportions.
Also, 20% of respondents are struggling with the problem of self-organization or disorganisation. After analyzing this group of respondents, it turned out that they mostly complained about their inactivity who had been working at a distance for less than a year.
What is the biggest problem with remote work?
These difficulties do not reduce the benefits of remote working, but only highlight the areas that we need to deal with if we want to work effectively in remote work.
The technologies of the present and the visible future have made remote work a successful option.
Of course, not all work can be done at remote work, that's not the goal.
Employers can experience that in remote working colleagues, especially those who work in creative work, are more effective in this form when the creative process is not interrupted by the disturbing processes of "job wear" and "office life". Remote work also has interruptions, but they are mostly volunteers because we can decide when we stand up, look at our messages or eat something.
In remote working, underperformers are visible, much more than in office environments where "social fog" and deceptive personality traits can mask real performance.
New leadership style
Remote work requires a different style of leadership.
Don't try to mimic the feeling of an office. It is often said by employers that it is not possible to control colleagues in remote work. Release the control. Find colleagues we trust.
Turn our energies into better communication. Choose the appropriate communication channel for your project and let go of e-mail dumping. Do not spend periodic distance meetings with everyone reporting how efficiently they spent the past period, because this is just about control or self-marketing. Shared documents and to-do lists are suitable for this. Focus on the present and the future, on new tasks at these meetings.
New work style
For those of you who have been working in the office for less time, there is a huge change in remote work. The initial euphoria for the feeling of freedom, even if it was soon dispersed, is when we face the routine of our everyday life and the lack of framework. Strong organization and self-discipline require structuring our day. Not everyone is born at home, there are those who will never be able to do this, the rest of them have good news that this is learning and there are some who can help.
Keep in mind that every environment can be confusing, especially for our family. Let's plan, create an ergonomically and psychologically healthy working environment that separates us from the rest of our home. Separate working time from leisure visually, acoustically or in any way possible. for example, pick up another dress.
If you reach us in the cabin fever, change the location, let's go to a cafe or co-working office for a short time.
Pay attention to a healthy lifestyle, eat regular and healthy, do sports, meet with friends and talk about things other than work.
Finally, a remarkable result of the study.
The interviewed remote workers do not want to do this job again in the office. Some of them would consider office work if they were given outstanding status, salary or project management.
